| | The Canadian Sheep Federation (CSF) has undertaken an initiative to develop an On-Farm Food Safety program for the sheep industry. The program is producer led with government/industry partnerships. Provincial sheep organizations are working closely with the national body in developing the program. The commitment is long term with the intent of gaining international recognition. It will enhance consumer confidence in the product and assist in developing export markets. The program is voluntary and market driven. While the program focus is food safety, it includes a quality assurance component. (Source: Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency)
The CSF has adopted a unique identification program for sheep. This program has three possible levels: 1) a mandatory program that tracks animals back to their original flock; 2) individual animal trace back; and 3) a database of all animals. Sheep producers agree they want a simple, inexpensive program. The sheep industry will likely adopt ear tags similar to the program under way in the cattle industry.
