Until such time as a national (Canadian) Johne's control strategy is initiated, the Alberta Johne's Working Group will continue to oversee the development, implementation and administration of Alberta Johne's control activities. At the centre of these activities is the herd status program (see Figure 1).

The AJWG will act as the agency in charge of administering the program, assessing the submission of laboratory results and petitions for certification (see Figure 2). The AJWG will act at an arm's length from the Government of Alberta, with the latter providing auditing and issuing of herd status certificates. Practicing veterinarians will sit at the core of this program, acting in their client's best interest, whether it be to advise on testing for Johne's (and maintaining the confidential results), participation in the herd status program, or implementing control procedures where the disease is found to be prevalent.
