Overview

Welcome to the Animal Health Branch of the Food Safety and Animal Health Division, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Animal Health Branch is one of four branches within the Food Safety and Animal Health Division (FSAHD). The primary function of the branch is to assist industry in monitoring the health of Alberta’s livestock by providing scientific expertise in surveillance programs, pathology services and epidemiological investigations. The branch includes surveillance veterinarians, diagnostic pathologists, epidemiologists, administrative support staff and animal health technicians who work closely with the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian in supporting roles and activities related to the Alberta Animal Health Act and Regulations.

The branch is comprised of 3 sections as outlined below.

Animal Health Programs Section

The Animal Health Programs Section is responsible for the administration of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, CWD & Scrapie) surveillance programs and the SRM disposal program. Members of this section also interact with industry in support of biosecurity initiatives that minimize and prevent the spread of disease.

Pathology Section

The Pathology Section focuses on assisting with the investigation of unusual disease problems identified by private veterinary practitioners. Members of this section participate in disease investigations, diagnostic pathology and responses in support of the Alberta Animal Health Act and Regulations.

Epidemiology Section

The Epidemiology Section focuses on analysis and reporting of animal health surveillance data gathered through the Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network. Members of this section participate in disease investigations and responses in support of the Alberta Animal Health Act and Regulations.

AVSN (Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network) is an effective and progressive network of livestock and poultry veterinary practices that serves as the foundation for animal health surveillance in Alberta. AVSN collects animal health related data and disseminates animal health information on an ongoing and timely basis for the mutual benefit of veterinarians, industry and government. It functions as an access point to the Alberta herd for targeted programs and, because of its existence, validate Alberta’s veterinary infrastructure.
