 Overview
Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development announces the availability of grants to award for farm health and safety programs in rural communities. Grant funds will be divided between eligible applicants based on the type of activity and the amount requested.

These grants will help sponsor programs focusing on farm safety awareness and prevention and may be used to fund programs such as:

  • Farm safety day camps;
  • School programs for youth;
  • Safety training for farm employees;
  • Farm safety workshops and seminars;
  • Development of safety resources for community use;
  • Other programs that fit into the identified goals of AAFRD’s Farm Safety Program goals.
Goals
  • To increase farm safety knowledge in local communities;
  • To encourage and develop safe work habits amongst adults and youth working on farms;
  • To teach children safety skills at an early age;
  • To decrease farm incidents through educational, awareness, and prevention programs.
Rules regarding funding
  • Matching funds are encouraged and can include in-kind sponsorship from local agencies, industry and community members;
  • Grants will be awarded to projects that are community based. Several communities can combine their grants to fund a common project. In this case, a lead group/agency must be named for administrative purposes;
  • The Lead Group must be non-profit;
  • The project/activity funded by the grant cannot be for profit;
  • Grants may not be applied to projects receiving other AAFRD funding.
  • In reviewing the grants for selection, an important criterion is the use of funds towards the development of a sustainable farm safety education effort. Use of the funds for consumable items at a one time only program will be given secondary consideration.
Availability of funds
There is a total amount of funds equaling $19,000 annually.

Duration
The grants will be awarded in throughout the year starting April 1st. Project activity and financial reports are due March 15 of each year until the project ends.
