Job Description: On a horse farm a general labourer performs a variety of duties including some of the following: routine cleaning and maintenance of barn, feeding and watering, administering medication under the supervision of barn manager, grooming and cleaning of horses, hoof care, assistance with foaling and care of pregnant mares and foals. May be involved in rock picking, haying, fence line repair, and general maintenance. A general labourer may be required to work weekends.
Training: On the job training is provided for interested individuals. A background in horse care and handling can be obtained through local equestrian organizations. There is a new Green Certificate Equine specialty currently under development.
Skills: A general labourer must have good horse handling skills, a gentle but firm manner, and understand all aspects of horse care. Although this is an entry level position, individuals can gain experience riding and working with horses through local equestrian organizations. Labourers must be in good physical condition, capable of physical labour including haying during the summer. They must have their own transportation and be reliable, responsible, and able to work independently or as part of a team. Individual must be versatile and capable of wearing many hats.
