Safety Up is the name of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s (ARD) ongoing safety campaign and one that has grown to encompass many areas of safety. From the Safety Up radio ads and posters designed to catch the attention of new and young workers to the educational resources aimed at helping farm owners and managers to train their young employees in safety, this campaign has covered a lot of ground. It has taken the combined efforts of some forward thinking Alberta farmers, safety professionals and adult education specialists to build this campaign.

Our new Farm Safety Advisory Committee has met several times since November and helped us to explore ideas on how we can provide safety training to Alberta farmers and employees in an easy to manage format.

Overwhelmingly, our committee members advised us to work with youth and their employers. As a result, ARD will be running two pilot programs in partnership with Green Certificate, the ARD onfarm training program for Alberta youth.

The pilot programs will use Safe ThinkTM, a safety training course that teaches participants to use critical thinking skills in assessing the hazards in any given situation. Safe Think trains workers to ask themselves six basic questions to assess any new or changed work situation. This method can be applied in any industry, home or recreational situation and is a valuable life skill for all.

The pilot program will include both the Green Certificate youth trainee along with their trainer/employer. Feedback from the pilot programs will help to shape the final program to be made available to all Alberta farmers and farm workers.
