As can be seen from the graph above, price’s for 800-900 lb feeders last year and in 2002 were above the 10 year average until the beginning of June when larger volumes started hitting the market. Prices for central Alberta feeders have been trading below the 10 year average for past few weeks but what’s going to happen to feeder prices in the next few months?

Canfax is reporting that we’ll probably see increased volumes in January and February and prices may come under pressure from the higher sales volume. Prices could also find support if there’s enough optimism surrounding the border reopening to live animals.

Regardless of how the price moves, you need to determine what price is acceptable for your operation and be ready to move your animals when that opportunity arises.
