| Ralph Wright, manager of the agro-meteorological applications and modelling section with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, analyzes the latest data regarding the lowest recorded temperatures to far in 2019.
“In the last days of January, a dome of persistent Arctic air settled over Alberta, bringing frigid temperatures across the entire province,” says Wright. “Since that time, 113 stations out of more than 420 have recorded temperatures dipping below the -40 C mark. Most of these are confined to the northern half of the province. The coldest temperatures recorded so far was -47.6 C at Kakwa Auto, located about 30 km north of Grande Cache. In total nine stations have now recorded temperatures of -45 C or lower.”
