The world over, consumers’ eating behavior is changing. Snack consumption has increased considerably over the years. This growing percentage of snacking occasions is a result of changing eating habits as well as innovations in product delivery, taste and availability. As meal eating occasions decrease and snacking behaviour grows, adapting meal product lines to snackable foods is a critical source of growth.
In 2012, The Nielsen Company of Canada, a national marketing research firm, was commissioned by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development to explore the following areas:
- How do Alberta residents and families snack? (understanding snacking behavior of Albertans)
- What role do health conscious behavior and attitudes play in snack purchasing behavior?
- What are the opportunities for savvy food processors to develop new, healthy snack food products and differentiation strategies?
