November Estimates of Production of Principal Field Crops, Alberta, 2013

On December 4, 2013, Statistics Canada released their November estimates of crop production for 2013. These estimates are the third and final production estimates for 2013.

Key Messages

  • Total production of principal field crops in Alberta was 34.5 million tonnes in 2013 … up 18.7 per cent from a year ago and 26.1 per cent above the 10-year average (2003-2012). The higher production stemmed mostly from record yields for nearly all crops.
  • Spring wheat production increased 36.9 per cent, to a record of 10.2 million tonnes. This was due to the record yield and increased seeded and harvested areas.
  • Barley production was up 24.2 per cent, to 5.5 million tonnes. The rise in production was attributed to a record average yield, which more than offset lower seeded and harvested areas.
  • Canola production in the province also set a new record at 6.0 million tonnes. Production increased 17.7 per cent from 2012 due to record yields.
  • The production for dry peas increased 9.3 per cent to 1.3 million tonnes, a new record. This was a result of record yields.
