Description:

Abstract: List of quarter sections and legal land descriptions in Dry Prairie protocol area developed from ESRI products.

Purpose:

This file lists the legal land descriptions of quarter sections within the Dry Prairie protocol areas within the Province of Alberta. This dataset was created to assist regulatory applications of the Quantification Protocol for Tillage System Management and its administration for the Government of Alberta. All other legal land descriptions within agricultural regions of Alberta are within the Parkland protocol area, including the boundary between the Parkland and Dry Prairie protocol areas.  The boundary is considered to be the fence-line on the Dry Prairie side of the quarter sections that represent the boundary. The quarter sections of the boundary are considered to be in the Parkland protocol area and the adjacent quarters toward the drier part of the province (usually south or east) are considered in the Dry Prairie protocol area.
The Parkland and Dry Prairie regions of Alberta have been widely recognized as distinct by the scientific community for a wide variety of agricultural interpretations (eg. cropping systems, yield). Since greenhouse gas removal coefficients are similar within but differ between soil zones (McConkey et al. 2006, Vanden Bygaart et al. 2008), soil zones were used to identify appropriate protocol areas for use in the Tillage System Management protocol (Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, 2004).
