Bill 14, the Agricultural Societies Amendment Act, was introduced on Wednesday, March 11 to ensure the legislation continues to meet the needs of agricultural societies in Alberta.

If passed, the amendments will:

· ensure that all agricultural societies have effective bylaws in place;
· modernize the existing legislation, including the removal of language dating back to the 1880s;
· make sure that the legislation is well aligned with the Societies Act, including provisions that apply to maintaining a member’s register and office, liability protection for directors, and processes for major decisions such as amalgamations; and
· recognize that large and small agricultural societies need to have flexibility in how they are structured to meet their unique needs.

The legislation was developed in consultation with the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies and its members.
