On January 26, 2011, diligence and hard work paid off for a Red Deer, Alberta company as they achieved Alberta HACCP Advantage (AHA!) certification. Permolex Ltd. is a unique value-added grain fractionation facility that produces bakery flour, vital wheat gluten, fuel grade ethanol and livestock feed.

“Being certified to AHA! offers many food safety benefits to Permolex”, says Janet Clendenning, Process/QA Manager at Permolex. “Benefits include customer retention, new customer acquisition, great involvement by staff, plant improvements, due diligence with respect to food safety and reduced insurance liability”.

Permolex was pleased that guidance by Food Safety Specialists with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development was available to assist in the development and implementation of program elements and also with the certification process.

Some of the attributes that Permolex appreciated about the AHA! Program included:

  • AHA! Standard is well written and easy to understand
  • AHA! program has sample documents to use as guides or as templates
  • AHA! program provides guidance on the certification and recognition process
  • AHA! program has many resources to assist processors in developing and implementing a food safety system.
