What Is the Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network?
The Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network (AVSN) is a comprehensive, integrated surveillance program supporting producers, private veterinarians and a team of animal disease experts to address livestock and poultry disease issues that affect industry, food safety and public health. It is part of the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance Network for laboratories, supports national surveillance and provides continuous and timely notification of important diseases as they occur.
AVSN can provide producers and veterinarians with tools to:
- Detect - diseases
- Respond - with specialized assistance
- Resolve - investigate livestock and poultry problems collaboratively
- Recover - support industry following an important disease event
- Communicate - information to assist in decisions about health issues in Alberta's livestock
AVSN is comprised of:

Veterinary Practice Surveillance (VPS)
Veterinary Practice Surveillance (VPS) is an innovative approach to surveillance that provides a secure web-based framework for veterinarians to report poultry and livestock disease and non-disease data via the Internet. Expansion of the VPS application is currently underway to include components for small ruminants, poultry and swine, along with the existing cattle component. Livestock Pathology Consultation Program (LPCP)
The Livestock Pathology Consultation Program (LPCP) is comprised of a team of veterinary pathologists who work in cooperation with private practitioners to investigate livestock or poultry problems; or unresolved health issues in Alberta's herd or flock.
Livestock Disease Investigation Network (LDIN)
The Livestock Disease Investigation Network (LDIN) provides a team of epidemiologists, surveillance veterinarians,pathologists as well as a dynamic group of laboratory, technical and administrative support staff to investigate complex, unresolved livestock health issues identified primarily by private practitioners, through VPS, LPCP, or the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (OCPV).
