| Return to Legislation in Alberta
- Food and Drugs Act – relates to the production, import, export, transport across provinces and sale of food in Canada; and
- Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act – protects consumers from misrepresentation in packaging and labelling. It applies to retailers, processors and producers.
- Canada Agriculture Products Act - regulates the import, export and interprovincial trade of agricultural products.
- Safe Food for Canadians Act - the purpose of the Act is to strengthen and modernize Canada's food safety rules involving foods in inter-provincial or international trade.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcement and administration of the Food and Drugs Act to protect consumers for any food that is not fit for consumption, including those that are sold exclusively within provinces. It also has the legislative power to enforce the fraud and labelling provisions of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Canada Agriculture Products Act , Safe Food for Canadians Act and associated regulations to all food processors in Canada, including Alberta's provincial licensed meat plants.
